29 Ekim Cumhuriyet Bayramı Resepsiyonu Konuşma Metni , 30.10.2012
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, the Turkish nation is celebrating with great pride the 89th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923, following a war of independence under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk whose vision has shed a light not only to the Turkish nation but to the whole world.
On this occasion, I would like to warmly welcome you all. We are honored with your presence in this reception.
In the 89 years that followed, the vision put forward by Atatürk has revamped the entire fabric of the Turkish nation transforming the country into a modern and progressive one. Today, Turkey stands proud to be a secular democracy, an active member of the Euro-Atlantic community pursuing full membership in the European Union and a market economy, the 16th largest in the world, supported by a dynamic private sector.
Through its unique geo-strategic location, Turkey serves not only as a crucial geographic, economic and political bridge between continents and peoples but acts as an important contributor to the regional and global peace and security in close cooperation and collaboration with its allies and partners.
Georgia and Turkey have a special friendship, based on unbreakable and deeply rooted ties. Turkey and Georgia are bound together by a common history and culture and our peoples share common values and traditions.
This year, we are also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Georgia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkey was one of the first countries which recognized Georgia’s independence in 1991 and our diplomatic relations officially have started in 1992.
Based on these exceptional friendship and ties, we were able to build close political relations and a solid economic cooperation. For long years, Turkey has been Georgia’s biggest trade partner and we still are. In fact, our economic relations passed the threshold of being merely economic cooperation. In the near future, I believe we will able to speak about economic integration.
As a sign of exemplary bilateral relations, the citizens of both countries enjoy a visa-free regime for their travels to our respective countries. Moreover, since last year, Turkish and Georgian citizens are travelling to each other’s country with their national identity cards. Works to establish a “one-window model” at two countries’ common border gates are going to be completed soon. The Batumi Airport is jointly used by Turkey and Georgia. These are just few examples of privileged relations between Turkey and Georgia.
I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Georgian authorities whose cooperation and collaboration have made this possible.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Taking this opportunity, I would like to congratulate the citizens of Georgia for peaceful and democratic parliamentary elections which held on October 1st. This elections mark a significant step for democracy in friendly and brotherly Georgia and that Georgian people, who have exercised their democratic rights freely, have given a meaningful message in terms of political maturity to the whole region, as well as to the world.
I also would like to congratulate the new formed government under the leadership of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.
I sincerely believe that the political, economic, social and cultural relations and friendly ties between our countries will continue to develop in the future as it has been in the past. I sincerely believe that the opportunities for Turkish-Georgian relations are almost unlimited.
I would like to reiterate Turkey’s support for the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and our readiness to contribute finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflicts within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to avail myself of this opportunity to reiterate, in my capacity as the Ambassador of Turkey, my commitment to contribute to the further strengthening and development of the existing ties of friendship and cooperation between Turkey and Georgia and wish happiness and continued prosperity to the people of Georgia.
To conclude, I would like to pay tribute to all, first and foremost to Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, who made it possible for Turkish people to take its well-deserved place in the community of modern nations. I would also like to congratulate the Turkish people, as well as our Georgian friends and distinguished guests who share our joy in celebrating the 89th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.
Now, I would like to say a few words in Turkish.
